The Writer
Most of the creatures of Magicalena get along great. Even the chaotic neutral ones are still good most of the time, and those that don’t have much empathy for others are generally reasonable. We all have bad days and emotions can get in the way, but creatures usually find common ground. We all need help sometimes and we like to come together with our strengths and weaknesses, individual ideas and backgrounds to become the rich tapestry of a diverse community. But there is one that all others avoid when they can.
Dressed in the business casual of many dads, a dark wizard called The Writer disguises himself and his nefarious nature while stalking the world. He clutches a wand in one hand and a spell book in the other.
Bound in the skin of an animal, his spell book opens to thin sheets that were carved from the inner tides of living trees. It is a thick tome of selfish thoughts, meddlesome experiments, and spells that reduce the complex and beauty of the world into crude syllables that he weaves into long incantations - sentencing their subjects to a narrative with a beginning and end.
His wand is wood, but its core is made from a soft, gray stone. This special ore was mined from deep in the earth where the death of living things goes to their final place, metamorphosed into stone over millennia. With it, The Writer presses the core into his spell book, leaving dark marks that flow across the white pages. Letter by letter, his spelling is a diatribe against the world, capturing it and its glorious creations in an endless pursuit to reduce and control.
Shunned by the creatures of Magicalena, The Writer spends his hours adapting the world to his understanding. He is mostly sedentary and prefers his isolation, but once in a while, he’s in a mood for research and ventures forth in his disguise. He wants to adapt your story, steal your dreams, and turn you into a puppet of his dark spelling. Beware! He will force his words into your mouth until you become a spectre of his reductive thoughts.
______
Beware, my child
The Writer approaches!
His hideous ego
Will cast illusions on you
Take your thoughts
Spell them slowly
Into short syllables
Sentence you to a short story
And reduce your life into fiction
Take your words and twist them
Into monologues and dialogues
Until you’re a narrative memoir
Hush!
The hideous Writer is coming!
Stay hidden!
If you’re seen
He will trap you in his words
Imprison you on a page in his book
If he speaks
Do not listen!
He will lead you astray
Make you live in his mind
While he shares all your secrets
The killer of trees
And the thief of dreams
Don’t give him your words
He will take them away!
Hide now, child!
Without you he’s nothing
He has nothing to say
No syllables to conjure his nefarious spelling.
